We are Ewen Leslie and Barbara Donnelly both from Fort William in the west Coast of the Highlands off Scotland. We started our search for a small business to purchase/create early 2023. Our search took us all over Scotland South to Dumfries all way West to Lochinver, North to Thurso and East to Arbroath. We looked at numerous properties in all places, but none captured our hearts. We took a weekend break near Macduff and toured around the area and fell in love with it.
After coming home we focused our search on Aberdeenshire and put a few offers in for various properties in and around Banff but were unsuccessful. In August 2025 we booked a lodge up in Lonmay so we could take Molly, our black lab, with us. On arrival we noticed a for sale sign at the road end and a quick web search showed it was where we were staying. We emailed the estate agent but were told it was under offer.
After a few weeks we found another property and were successful with our offer so put our family home up for sale. Five weeks in our buyer had to pull out due to circumstance out with their control which meant we had to withdraw from our purchase. Feeling deflated we took our home of the market and planned for a holiday abroad to unwind and recharge the batteries.
The very next day Barbara was sitting having her morning coffee and couldn’t help herself from browsing various property web sites and up popped Wildflower Eco lodges for sale. After a quick call to me we emailed the estate agent asking for the particulars which were sent to us. After a quick call to Dan and Louisa it was established, their sale had also fallen through. A hasty visit back to Lonmay was planned for the weekend and after a tour of the property a deal was struck and 10 weeks later, we took ownership of Wildflower Eco Lodges late November 2025.
When building Wildflower Eco Lodges, Dan and Louisa wanted to make sure they were sympathetic to the environment in the design and build. They used local tradesmen and suppliers wherever possible, carried out the majority of the work themselves and using recycled materials. They wanted to show the possibilities of using eco friendly building materials to create a comfortable living space, prioritising guest comfort, whilst promoting a reduce/reuse/recycle outlook.
We wish Dan and Louisa all the best in their new chapter of life, meanwhile we will endeavour to honour the passion and ethos that brought Wildflower Eco Lodges to fruition.
